Jowell-Kaase prize nominations now open

Candidates for the Jowell-Kaase Early Career Researcher Prize 2024 can now be submitted to the European Social Survey (ESS).

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) is seeking nominations for the prize that will be presented during the 5th International ESS Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, on 8-10 July 2024.

The recipient will receive €1,000 and will be invited to give a keynote speech at the conference. Travel and accommodation costs will also be provided.

The prize recognises excellence in the field of comparative social research by a promising new researcher from any scientific discipline.

The prize - named after Professor Sir Roger Jowell and Professor Max Kaase, the founders of the ESS - will be awarded to someone whose early achievements have already made a significant academic impact.

Nominees must have analysed ESS data in their research and published articles in international peer-reviewed journals or in books released by reputable academic publishers.

The research must have addressed one of the substantive topics covered by the ESS in a comparative perspective, either cross-nationally and/or across different rounds.

The competition is open to researchers that have completed their PhD since 1 July 2018 and to PhD students registered at a university.

We encourage nominations from early-career researchers who have conducted significant research on substantive topics covered by the survey.

In case of self-nomination, an additional letter of support must be obtained from someone who is familiar with the nominee's research.

The winner of the Jowell-Kaase Prize 2024 will be selected from all nominations by a sub-group consisting of members from the SAB and 2024 Conference organising committee.

Chair of the SAB and recipient of the 2016 Jowell-Kaase Prize, Carolin Rapp, said:

“The Jowell-Kaase Prize 2024 offers early career researchers a wonderful opportunity to showcase their impactful and high-quality empirical analysis of ESS data.

“We encourage nominations from early-career researchers who have conducted significant research on substantive topics covered by the survey. Our sub-committee is looking forward to selecting a winner.

“In addition to paying tribute to the ESS co-founders, this prize highlights the significant number of early career researchers who have used ESS data to advance their fields.”

The conference - Addressing grand societal challenges cross-nationally: Investigation, innovation and insights from 20 years of data - will allow users of our data to come together and showcase a wide range of scientific outputs that high-quality cross-national time series data can provide.

The conference will celebrate 20 years of the ESS providing data to the scientific community and comes as we prepare to change data collection methodology in Round 13 (2027/28).

The deadline for Jowell-Kaase nominations is Sunday 31 March 2024. Nominations should be sent to ESS-conference-24@city.ac.uk.
